On March 28th, 340 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, along with the organizers of the flight, 895 RCACS, were fortunate to participate in a CC130J-Hercules flight put on by pilots and crew from 8 Wing Trenton.

All aircrew represented the three Hercules squadrons in Trenton; 436 Transport, 424 Search and Rescue(SAR) and 426 Transport Training Squadrons.  The opportunity for the cadets to fly with the CAF was a Canadian Air Force(CAF)  familiarization mission. The Herc and its crew flew into the Kitchener/Waterloo airport from Trenton Ontario and was hosted on the apron by Chartright Corporation, a Fixed Base Operator(FBO).

The day started with a comprehensive safety briefing by the crew to the two cadet Squadrons in Chartright’s lounge followed by a ground tour of the aircraft. All 60 cadets and staff were able to experience what the interior and exterior of a Herc looks like close up and were able, for a short time, to visit the flight deck.

Once the on-ground tour was complete, the respective squadrons were then flown in the aircraft for a 30 minute flight north towards Mount Forest. The flight included a period of time where the rear ramp of the Herc was extended down and open. A mesh cargo restraining mechanism was put in place to prevent anyone, other than the crew, from entering the ramp area. The view was spectacular …

Thanks and kudos go out to Capt. Storey, from 895 RCACS for offering us an opportunity to participate in such a unique and exciting event and thanks to Capt. Levesque and his crew for sharing their experiences and unique insight into Herc flying and the Canadian Air Force.

This opportunity created core memories for the cadets that they will take away for a lifetime.
