While the phone lines were heating up inside 98 The Beach radio station for the 3rd annual Hospital radiothon fundraiser, outside there was hockey excitement in the park behind the station.
Minor Hckey PeeWee Girls L and PeeWee Boys LL#2 teams faced off in their own fundraiser for the hospital and as part of the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup competition that could earn them $100,000 and a spot on Hockey Night in Canada.
The teams raised some $9,000 in under two weeks for the Light the Way campaign and, for those phoning in to the station who mentioned the hockey game, their donations were credited to the teams. All monies raised were donated to the hospital and the team that wins the $100,000 can donate it to the charity of choice and, for the Storm, it’s the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Organizer, Amanda Froese, Director of Infrastructure & Development Services with the Town of Saugeen Shores, organized the event and said that it will now become an annual fundraiser for the teams.
Following the game, everyone was invited into the station for treats and hot chocolate provided again by Dave Falconer, owner of Tim Hortons. They then had the opportunity to experience on-air broadcasting and see first-hand the workings of a radio station.
