Following what seemed to be a long construction period, the second floor of Saugeen Memorial Hospital has undergone a much-welcomed rejuvenation and the recent ribbon cutting on September 3rd officially opened the newly designed space.

With on-going construction since November 2023, staff has continued to provide patient care. “It’s a testament to the teamwork, communication and flexibility that was needed and carried out by staff throughout,” said Beth Morris, VP Clinical Programs, Quality & Chief Nursing Executive of Brightshores Health System.

A new central nursing station welcomes visitors and gives nursing staff needed space and tools.  The bright airy feeling with light coloured walls and new lighting, that is dimmable at night, is conducive to well-being for both staff and patients.

An improved bathroom provides a walk-in shower for patients while a quiet workspace with five computer stations has been created for staff and physicians.

For those staff working long hours, a newly created nurses’ lounge became a key area.  The space provides individual lockers, a respite area and cooking facilities for a quick bite to eat or a welcome cup of tea. With black-out window coverings, it also can become a quiet retreat when needed.

In addition, the renovation has also provided areas for physiotherapy, a visiting dietician and other support care needs and services.

“This will benefit patients, physicians and staff,” said Hospital Foundation Chair Martha Bennett. “This was a real team effort and the Foundation was only too happy to help where possible.”
