Car racing enthusiasts have lost a long-time stock car racer in Ontario, and past owner of Varney Speedway when Alex Hamilton passed away on Friday, October 27th.
Hamilton is credited as being one of the pioneers of late model racing in the province of Ontario
Alexander Beverly Hamilton, of RR#1 Priceville, passed away at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Durham on Friday, October 27th, 2023 in his 73rd year. Beloved husband of Sheila (nee MacArthur). Loving father of Sandy Hamilton and his wife Kaitlyn, and Shannon and her husband Jim Gibson. Cherished grandfather of Silas, Kaleb, Everett, Cole, Preston, and Ross. Dear brother of Lynda Hamilton, Deby and her husband Blaine Ferguson, James Hamilton, Bryon Hamilton and his wife Betty, and Jack Genoe and his wife Tammy. Brother-in-law of Don MacArthur, Rod and Donna MacArthur, Heather Webb, and Laura Goldrick and Len Critchley. Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Ross and Ruth Hamilton, and by his parents-in-law John and Janet MacArthur.
Alex was an entrepreneur and owned and operated various businesses, including Varney International Speedway for over five years. He also enjoyed stock car racing and started his racing career at a young age of 15, which he enjoyed this for most of his adult life. He retired from racing and came back for one race season, having his farewell tour at the age of 70.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating Alex’s life will be held at the Durham Community Centre, 451 Saddler Street West, Durham on Thursday, November 2nd at 2 p.m., with visitation prior to the service from 1 – 1:45 p.m. A come and go celebration of Alex’s life will be held following the service from 3 – 5 p.m.
Private interment of cremated remains at McNeil Cemetery, Priceville. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to Durham Baptist Church or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to the McCulloch-Watson Funeral Home, Durham.
