Oldest surviving RCMP member dies – Mike Pepe – October 22, 2019

Michele (Mike) Angelo Pepe, of Port Elgin passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 in his 102nd year.  Loving husband of the late Olga.  Beloved father of Mike and his wife Louise, Janice and her husband Doug Woito, and Steve and his wife Joanne.  He is fondly remembered by all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Born in St. Joseph’s hospital in 1917, he began his career as an RCMP officer in Alberta in the 1930s and was the oldest surviving member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), known as the ‘Senior Man’ with the lowest Regimental Number 13134.  Mike spent his life in service to his country and community after joining the Force in December, 1938, serving in ‘K’ and ‘B’ Division and then back to ‘K’ where he retired in January, 1966. He was a Life Member of the RCMP Edmonton Vets.

 

Mike was the Chief Security Supervisor with Ontario Hydro Construction BNPD (1966-1982); Municipal Councillor in Port Elgin (1982-1987); Past President, Service Officer and recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal (1994) Royal Canadian Legion – Port Elgin Branch 340; and a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph’s Parish in Port Elgin.

He lived his final days at Elgin Lodge in Port Elgin, where his birthday was annually celebrated.

Mike rests in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Southampton.  Memorial donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 340, the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation, the RCMP Heritage Centre or your choice of charitable donations would be appreciated by the family.
