On the passing of former Mayor Art Eby of Southampton

It is with great regret that the Town of Saugeen Shores recognizes the passing of former Southampton Mayor Art Eby.

Mayor Eby’s legacy and contributions to our community can not be understated.  A member of an old Saugeen Shores family, Mayor Eby was active in Southampton’s political, cultural and recreational organizations for more than half a century.

He joined the Southampton Curling Club in 1955 and kept curling for another 64 years, finally hanging up his broom in 2019, before the club gave him a lifetime membership the next year.  He also served as the president of the Southampton Rotary Club in the early 1980s, presiding over the construction of the club’s Rotary Hall.  In the late 90’s, Eby answered the call to civic duty and became Southampton Mayor.

Perhaps his greatest contribution came through his career.  As a long-time educator at Saugeen District Secondary School, “Mister Eby” guided generations of young Saugeen Shores students to and through the social sciences, teaching them how the world works and their place in that world.

In honour of Mayor Eby’s passing, I have ordered all the municipal flags flown at half-mast until Wednesday morning.

On behalf of Council and all Saugeen Shores residents, I offer my sincere condolences to Mayor Eby’s family and friends.

Luke Charbonneau,
Mayor, Town of Saugeen Shores
