Northport Public School Senior Band in Port Elgin has been invited by the Walkerton Festival Adjudicator to take part in the Provincial Music Festival (OMFA) for only the second time in seven years.
The festival is by invitation only and taking part in the festival requires the band to submit a recording of two pieces. On Wednesday morning (May 8th), after early morning rehearsal, a sound engineer arrived to record two of the band’s pieces in the school gym. Entries are submitted electronically and results will come back before the end of the school year.
“I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to work with such talented students who strive for excellence and are dedicated to making meaningful music,” says music teacher, Andrea Rideout. “I’m very proud of them for their hard work and accomplishments throughout this year. Most of the Grade 8’s have been in my Music classes since they were in grade 2. It’s been very rewarding to watch them grow as individuals and musicians, moving from recorders, to bucket drums, junior to senior band. Ending the year with Provincials and Nationals is a great way for Northport to finish its Intermediate Instrumental program.”
With the move of grades 6 through 8 to Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) in the Fall, it is the end of the Senior music program at the elementary level.
