Revised Southampton Care Centre design popular with Planning Committee

Almost three years ago, on Friday, December 18th (2020), Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson announced that the Southampton Care Centre at 140 Grey St. S. would be undergoing a major redevelopment.

The revised Site Plan for the development has now been submitted by Southampton Care Centre Inc. to the Town (Feb. 21/23) with changes to include the originally proposed 160 long-term care beds, in addition to 85 apartments geared toward seniors.

“I am so pleased to see apartments geared to seniors,” added Grace.  “As a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), in the past we raised the issue of senior couples going into long-term care and not being able to remain together in their living environment so this is a good thing.”

Another key aspect that Councillor Cheryl Grace found especially appealing was that the proposed design showed the integration of outdoor environments with indoor spaces such as the lounges, lunchrooms, and dining Rooms with the courtyards and terraces to allow nature to be both visually and physically prominent.

The existing care facility is part of the Jarlette Health Services, a family owned and operated company, and it will remain open and operational while construction occurs.

“It is anticipated that construction will begin in the second quarter of this year,” said Jay Pausner of Saugeen Shores Economic Development.
