Saugeen Shores joins Grey Bruce in recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

In a statement by Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau, “Saugeen Shores Town Council joins the Grey Bruce Elder Abuse Prevention Network – along with communities across the globe – in recognizing June 15, 2023, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to put a spotlight on this growing problem.

“The Town is experiencing the same demographic change as many other communities across Canada and the world; namely, the rapid growth in the number of people aged 65 and over,” says the Mayor. “Unfortunately, as that cohort grows, so does the prevalence of elder abuse as both a public health issue and a human rights issue.”

He added that, “It is both heartbreaking and unacceptable that people who have long been vibrant and contributing members of society should now face physical violence, mental degradation, and outright neglect as they become more vulnerable.  These older citizens deserve our respect and our care.”
