At Council’s invitation, the 2023 Senior of the Year Award was presented to Rob Stanley. Council presented the nomination on behalf of the community and MPP Lisa Thompson presented the award in recognition of the Provincial Ontario Senior of the Year.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau said that Stanley has spent a lifetime on behalf of his community as a philanthropist, a volunteer and just as a really outstanding citizen. “I think it’s absolutely fitting that we present Rob with the Ontario Senior Award.”
Among his accomplishments are:
- Co-Chair of the Saugeen Shores Lamont Sports Park fundraising campaign raising over $1.8 million
- Made over 50 verbal presentations to potential donors
- Successfully solicited hundreds of thousands of dollars to the campaign
- An on-site volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce for 2022
- Elected to Director for Habitat for Humanity
- Executive Director of Saugeen SPARKS Youth training Centre
- As a member of the (then) Society of Engineering Professionals, he negotiated medical locum housing for visiting doctors
“By the declaration made by the Mayor on behalf of the community, it sounds as though you’re quite the ‘energizer’ bunny,” said MPP Lisa Thompson. “Thanks you for all you do and please don’t stop.”
Stanley comes from a large family with several siblings and Deputy Mayor Diane Huber, a long-time friend of the family, said that, “Rob reflects the role that his parents have had and the influence they have contributed to raising such a great family.”
Vice-deputy Mayor Mike Myatt, who served as co-Chair on the Lamont Sports Park fundraising team with Stanley, said that, “Rob represents what being a true volunteer means.”
In his acceptance speech, Stanley recognized the many committee members of the Lamont Sports Park fundraising team and also his new partners in his recent endeavour as Executive Director of Saugeen SPARKS Centre for youth.
