SDSS students to compete at the Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly

Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) is proud to announce that 12 outstanding students will be travelling to Toronto to participate in the Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly (SOMA), made possible through the generous support of the Port Elgin Rotary Club, the Southampton Rotary Club and prize money recently won at the Nuclear Innovation Institution competition.

(L)Ken McCulloch of Port Elgin Rotary and Dave Bertrand & MaryEllen Higgins of Southampton Rotary(R) presented students                                                        with funds to help with their attendance at SOMA

SOMA is one of the province’s premier student conferences, offering participants the opportunity to engage in high-level debate, diplomacy, and global problem-solving. Students represent different countries, collaborate to draft resolutions, and tackle complex international issues in a dynamic and challenging environment.

This year’s SDSS delegation has already demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication, recently earning first place at the Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII) Model UN conference. Their success reflects their preparation, critical thinking, and teamwork.

Attending SOMA, however, comes with significant travel and accommodation costs due to the distance between Saugeen Shores and Toronto. With expenses for long-distance transportation, lodging, and conference registration, participation would not have been possible without community partnership.

Thanks to the generous funding provided by the Port Elgin and Southampton Rotary Clubs, and prize money from NII, these students will now be able to represent SDSS — and the Saugeen Shores community — on a provincial stage.

Model United Nations provides students with invaluable leadership development, public speaking experience, and global awareness — skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

SDSS extends its sincere thanks to the Port Elgin Rotary Club, the Southampton Rotary Club and Nuclear Innovation Institute for their commitment to youth, education, and community leadership.
