Southampton celebrates Canada Day 2024

In celebration of Canada’s 157th birthday and Canada Day 2024, Southampton (Saugeen Shores) held an afternoon event that featured a wide variety of music, a Rotary charity BBQ and topped it off with fireworks.

Hundreds gathered with their lawnchairs at the foot of High Street in Southampton, at what is known as Dominion Lookout at the base of the giant flag and overlooking Lake Huron, to sit back and take in the music.

Three genres of music entertained the multi-generational crowd. From the rock sound of “Somethings Always Flying”, to show tunes by the “Southampton Concert Band”  and then the famous local Beatles tribute band, “Get Back”, there was music for every age.

The Rotary Club of Saugeen Shores was kept extremely busy as long line-ups waited patiently for BBQ burgers and hot dogs, along with this year’s special ethnic samosas.

Not far away was the Southampton Rotary Club filling the air with the smell of hot buttery popcorn by donation.

At the end of the day was what everyone anticipated – the fireworks display hosed by the Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce.  Along the beachfront to the Southampton harbour at the mouth of the Saugeen River, people waited for dark and the annual fireworks light show. With a perfect Lake Huron sunset, not a whisper of a breeze and the little range light at the river mouth, it was a perfect backdrop for the explosion of colour against the night sky.
