Two weeks ago staff at the Super 8 Motel in Port Elgin signed up for the Gran Fondo Lake Huron Change a Life Challenge and announced that their team would log their kms this summer (walking, biking etc.) until they had covered the distance across Ontario, 1,114km in total. Their goal is to raise $5,000. Super 8 challenged other local businesses, groups, clubs and residents to form a team and meet or beat their challenge.
Southampton Foodland heard the call and have come back with their own creative challenge. The Foodland team will be tracking their kms this summer and will walk the distance of traveling from Southampton, ON to Southampton, New York (1,083 km) with a goal of raising $5,000 in the Gran Fondo Change a Life Challenge.
Foodland owner Martino Catalano has been a proud supporter of the Hospital Foundation for the last few years and reached out to the Hospital Foundation to be a Gran Fondo sponsor for this year’s event. Southampton Foodland will help to supply one of the event’s grand prizes of groceries for a year.
In addition, Martino Catalano (L) and some of his staff were pleased to present a cheque for $600 to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation from funds raised through their recent hanging flower basket sales, where $1 from every basket was donated to the Foundation. Funds raised will go toward the purchase of a new patient bed mattress at the hospital.
Martino and his team are now challenging others in the community to come up with their own fun and creative activity this summer and put a team in the Gran Fondo Change a Life Challenge to help raise funds to purchase new ECG machines and a ventilator for the hospital.
There are also some great prizes for those who fundraise, including $10,000 towards your rent or mortgage, groceries for a year, gas for a year, a $2,000 Saugeen Shores staycation and much more.
