Volunteers make a difference in caring for Lake Huron beaches

It was a blustery day as volunteers gathered at Port Elgin’s Main Beach and Gobles Grove Beach for the annual end-of-summer clean-up on Saturday, September 6th (2025).

Sponsored by the Port Elgin and Saugeen Township Beachers Association, working with the Lake Huron Coastal Centre, volunteers came out on Saturday morning and armed with buckets, bags and garbage pickers roamed the beaches clearing them of any garbage refuse, bottles, cigarette butts and anything else that does not belong on a beach.

At Port Elgin Main Beach, Dave Reynolds, chair and Meredith Watson of the Lake Huron Coastal Centre, registered volunteers and provided them with the tools for gathering litter/garbage along the shoreline.

Further along at Gobles Grove, volunteers from Port Elgin Rotary Club and Friends of MacGregor Park were also busy searching out litter.

Sue Little-McCulloch focused her attention cigarette butts.  “They are everywhere.  People have to realize that these do not biodegrade.”

Iain and Melissa Page of Port Elgin Rotary were also out with                         son Ollie and Daughter Zoe

On May 28th, Dave Middleton of Middleton Finner financial services strolled the Port Elgin Main Beach collecting bags of litter and garbage along the lakeshore.

Also in early May, local high-school students from SDSS were kept busy painting the sun shelter structures at Port Elgin Main Beach to earn their required volunteer hours.

It appears that, if it weren’t for volunteers playing an integral environmental role when it comes to maintaining Saugeen Shores beaches, they would be in dire straits buried in litter and garbage.
