Volunteers track fish movements through electronic means

Despite rain and cold temperatures, volunteers of the Lake Huron Fishing Club (LHFC) were at Denny’s Dam in the early morning of April 25th to take part in the annual ‘transponder’ project.

As salmon traversed the fish ladder at Denny’s Dam on the Saugeen River, some 50 were caught for the purpose of inserting electronic transponders in order to detect their travels and gather data about them.

The procedure is delicate and was carried out with surgeon-like precision by Dr. Chris Bunt of Biotactic Fish and Wildlife Research with the help of assistants who catalogued each fish including its weight, length and girth and then designated a number for tracking purposes.

Fish were manually netted in the ‘fish ladder’ and, following their minor-surgery were released in to the Saugeen River above Denny’s Dam.  The entire procedure requires considerable manual labour and detailing of records.
