Watoto Children bring energy plus to SouthPort

On May 30th at SouthPort Pentecostal Church in Saugeen Shores, the energy in the room was palpable as the Watoto Children’s Choir took to the stage.

The Choir is a group of African children’s choirs based in Kampala, Uganda, at Watoto Church and that tours internationally. Each choir is composed of approximately eighteen to twenty-two children from Uganda. Their tours raise money as well as awareness for the Watoto orphanages in Kampala.

“Watoto” means “Children” in Swahili. The choir is made up of children who have lost one or both parents, often as a result of AIDS or violence.  Watoto operates six choirs which tour Asia, Australia, Europe and North and South America.

SouthPort Church was filled to capacity as the children in the choir infused everyone with their energy.

Following the performance, a collection was taken in support of the Choir – a total has not yet been determined but Pastor David Baker said that all monies raised would go directly to the Choir’s fundraising efforts.
