They say that everything happens for a reason and, when Annie Meirowski purchased a raffle ticket from the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, she didn’t know how true that could be.
She and husband, Mike, had a barbeque that had seen better days and, in fact, they had just taken it to the landfill.
Then, on Monday June 27th, it would turn out to be their lucky day. The local Hospital Auxiliary had been holding a fundraising raffle for the Bring TOM to Town Ct Scanner campaign, and the prize was a Broil King BBQ donated by Martin’s Home Hardware in Southampton, along with a gift basket from Southampton Meat Market.
On Monday, Lab phlebotomist, Cynthia Kidd was asked to draw the winning ticket and the name she pulled was … Annie Meirowski of Port Elgin.
Annie Meirowski said that husband had been ‘nursing’ the old barbeque along since last year. “I was absolutely thrilled when I got the call that my ticket was the winner,” she said.
“I actually thought it was a joke someone was trying to pull,” added husband Mike, “as we had just gotten rid of our old BBQ and didn’t have one. This couldn’t have happened at a better time … and we barbeque all year round.”
The couple picked up their prize on Thursday (June 30th) just in time for the Canada Day long weekend.
They then immediately went to Martin’s Home Hardware, first to thank the Martins for their donation and then to purchase a cover for their new BBQ. “We are going to buy all our BBQ utensils and a rotisserie from Martin’s,” said Mike Meirowski.

“I totally support the hospital,” said Annie Meirowski. “I have had to have a CT scan and had to go to Owen Sound so this is really important for the community. I try to support in any way I can by buying Catch the Ace tickets, this raffle ticket, and donating. Having a local hospital and state-of-the-art equipment is extremely important.”
