Jr. Firefighting program thriving after 33 years

Any graduation is an exciting time and, for the Jr. Firefighters of Saugeen Shores, it’s especially exciting as they have the chance to show and demonstrate to their families and friends what they have learned during their six weeks in the program.

For 33 years, the program has taught elementary students fire-related safety.  From First Aid to CPR, Home fire safety to how to use a fire extinguisher, the different types of fires to working in a HAZMAT suit for hazardous materials, auto extracation to handling a firehose, the Jr. firefighters learn the in-depth rules regarding fire safety and the work that firefighters do.

Each student also receives a certificate upon completion of the program.  “There’s no greater way for kids to learn about fire safety than to take part in hands-on activities,”  says Deputy Fire Chief Rob Atkinson.

Fire Chief Ed Melanson adds that, “Community support and the support of our volunteer firefighters go a long way in helping us run this valuable program for area youth.  We have approximately 50 volunteers who are dedicated and committed to their community.”
