Every two years, Saugeen Shores Fire Department recognizes the achievements and length of service of its volunteers.

The ‘evening of Honour 2025’ took place on Saturday, November 15th at the Plex in Port Elgin that featured dinner and remarks by special guests including Pat O’Connor on behalf of Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb and Mayor Luke Charbonneau.

O’Connor (per MP Lobb) said that the night recognizes the “.. dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism of our firefighters, both full-time and volunteer.  Firefighters run toward danger when others run away and they do it out of commitment, courage and teamwork. You represent the very best of Saugeen Shores … your work saves lives, protects property and strengthens our community very day.  To Chief Melanson and the leadership team … thank you for fostering excellence and guiding the next generation of firefighters.”

Chief Ed Melanson also explained that of 60 applications for new firefighters, 16 were chosen.  “We are so lucky to be supported by Council and have our Public Education service.  The Public Education talks to people about fire safety, emergency management and what to do in the event of a flood or a tornado. They are an integral part of our Fire Department.” He also paid tribute to the families of the firefighters for their support.

He also thanked the Mayor and Council for their support and for seeing the vision of the Fire Department.  In an emotional tribute, he said that he could not function without Deputy Fire Chief Rob Atkinson. “I know that he has my back when we have to move with the speed of light.  No matter when I call, he always answers the phone and I have to tell you publicly how much he means to me. Everyday we huddle and talk and it’s truly a remarkable team. I can’t wait to come in to work every day … it shows the camaraderie and who we are, what we are trying to do and the culture that we have changed. I am here for you and because of you.”

Melanson then thanked the Saugeen Shores staff. “To move as fast as we are and to do as much as we are doing and to try to get to a point where we are the best volunteer service in the Province, it takes a whole village to do that. We ask for help and for support and we continue to get it.”
