The Junior Firefighter program has been on-going for more than 30 years since it was established in 1988, with the only exception being during Covid.

Saugeen Shores Fire Chief, Ed Melanson, welcomed the students saying that not everyone gets into the program.  “This is a very special opportunity and our firefighters volunteer their time as instructors.  You’re going to have to be respectful of them, and of each other, and you are going to have to work hard as you’ll be learning a lot, but don’t forget to have fun.”

Although the program teaches the young students about fire safety, First Aid and other life-saving techniques through hands-on experiences, it also teaches them about teamwork, safety, being respectful, and how and why to follow rules. It’s also an exciting time however, as they learn about fire trucks, how to use a fire hose, an extinguisher, carry out CPR first aid, how to bandage and create a sling and get into a HAZMAT suit among others.  For some, it may be the beginning of a firefighter career in the future.

Instructor Jenna Underwood, Saugeen Shores Public Education and Outreach officer, a former teacher and the first female firefighter, went through the procedures and rules that would have to be followed.  In addition, she gave them their first assignment. “You will have to create an escape plan for your family in the event of fire at home and hand it in to be graded.”

Upon completion of the six-week program, there is a graduation ceremony where the students demonstrate to family and friends what they have learned and each receives a certificate of program completion.

Saugeen Shores Fire Service has one of the highest volunteer firefighter retentions in the Province with several having served 20 years or more.
