The Trelford family, descendants of Lt. Joseph Lionel Tranter, are committed to finding their ancestor.
On Friday, June 5th (2026), the family presented $3,450 to Southampton Legion Branch 155. The Legion is heading up the fundraising effort to recover the remains of Lt. J. Lionel Tranter, a local Southampton ‘boy’ who went to war.

The search has been initiated by Dr. Aaron Taylor of Acadia University in Halifax, and who has been working in collaboration with local historian G. William (Bill) Streeter.
Legion Branch 155 is continuing fundraising and, to date, has agreed to match funds raised, to a total of $5,000.
“We are thrilled to take part in this initiative,” said Derek Johnston of Southampton Legion. “This is an important undertaking for our local soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice.”
Max Trelford said that his sister, Whitney in Halifax where Acadia University is located, will soon be raising awareness of the recovery initiative in interviews with CBC and CTV television.
