The Saugeen Shores Tour of Gardens is only a matter of days away on July 11th and homeowners are out in their gardens for last minute touches.
For Cathy Andrews, gardening has been a life-long passion for more that 40 years. Her previous home in Gobles Grove featured extensive gardens and, now in Port Elgin, her gardens are somewhat smaller and more manageable with raised beds and an outdoor living space in the backyard.

“When we moved here 20 years ago, the first thing I insisted on was planting trees. In Gobles Grove, we were surrounded by trees and I had to have some immediately. I said to my husband, I want trees and I want them to grow fast,” she says laughing.
Another addition were the raised beds that circumvent the house and that are filled with perennials. “Eventually, I want the one bed to be filled with greenery instead of colour with flowers,” says Andrew. “This year has been a bit of a challenge with the rabbits. I had a beautiful stand of Shasta daisies but I guess they were too tempting a treat for the rabbit.”
The backyard is a quiet oasis where an outdoor living space overlooks the garden and a magnificent honeysuckle sprawls across the top of the fence.

While the property is smaller than their previous one in Gobles Grove, Cathy Andrews is always thinking creatively and wanting to make changes. After 40 years of gardening, designing new flower beds and spending time outdoors is not about to stop any time soon.
