Southampton (Saugeen Shores), what was a quiet quaint lakeside community on the shore of Lake Huron, is quickly becoming known for its cultural and family fun experiences, particularly in the summer months.
From Marine Heritage Society daily tours to Chantry Island, and the annual Marine Heritage Festival in July to the August Civic Day long weekend, it is fast becoming a favourite summer destination for visitors.
The 2nd annual Southampton Arts Festival held on the August long weekend is an example of the community’s many artists coming together to create a Festival that crosses all genres of the arts. The Southampton Art Gallery, the hub of the Festival, opened the event on Friday beginning the Civic Day long weekend that featured art exhibits, the ever-popular 50 Little Masterpieces, Bruce County Play House live professional theatre, sidewalk musicians, Art on the Fence by the Shoreline Artists and Indigenous art unveiling.

The annual 50 Little Masterpieces reception hosted by the Art Gallery featured 50 little 10″ x 10″ artworks by local artists. Every artist is unique in style and medium used and each Little Masterpiece reflects the artistry found throughout the region. Those who purchased a $100 ticket had their name entered into a draw and could then choose a painting of their choice. There were also six unique chairs, again painted by local artists, along with a silent auction of original pieces.
St. Paul’s Anglican Church also held its mammoth Festival of Treasures where visitors could choose from the many household items, jewellery, crystal, Christmas decor, and more, all by donation with proceeds going to local charitable organizations.

Nearby, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church held their annual bake sale fundraiser and inside offered up delicious lunch specials.
Just around the corner, at what is considered Bruce County’s ‘gem’, the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre welcomed visitors with free admission on Sunday, August 1st and a wide variety of fun family activities, in addition to the unveiling of a special art project.
The list is long and continues through August with the Saugeen First Nations Pow Wow (Aug. 8 & 9), Metis Redezvous (Aug. 8), Classic Car Tour and Car Show (Aug. 9), Gran Fondo Lake Huron Hospital fundraiser (Aug. 15), Marine Heritage Artisans Market every Friday, Thursday evening Cruisers Night car show and Bruce County Playhouse live theatre.
