Letter to the Editor: Mike Myatt — 50 years of serving the community

Dear Editor;

Vice Deputy Mayor Mike Myatt is retiring from Council.

Mike, I want to thank you for your years of service to Saugeen Shores, not only as an elected official, but as a dedicated employee as well.

Mike served the community for 12 years as the director of Recreation for Saugeen Shores.  Going back further, Mike worked for 26 years in the Recreation department of the City of Owen Sound.

Supporting and contributing to our community is part of Mike’s DNA, so after council, Mike ran and served four years as Saugeen Ward Councillor.  After that, Mike ran and served two terms, 8 years, as Vice Deputy Mayor.  That adds up to 50 years of serving the community.

Mike Myatt has made a positive influence in so many ways in so many fronts.  Mike’s legacy is in parks, ball diamonds, and facilities.  It is Lamont Sports Park, and the Aquatic and Wellness Centre.  Mike’s legacy is in affordable housing and acts of charity.  Mike’s legacy is in listening and in helping citizens.  At the council table, his legacy is working with fellow councillors, debating, convincing, encouraging, and uniting us.  At a work level Mike’s legacy is in training and mentoring employees and always having the best interests of the Town in mind.

On a personal note, I appreciate how Mike “took me under his wing”, including me on causes we had in common, and making me feel welcome and part of the team. Mike, your wisdom and leadership, and you’re reaching out to me, made me think of you as “Uncle Mike”.

Saugeen Shores could not have asked for more from a council member than you gave.  You will be sorely missed and impossible to replace.

I know how important your family is you.  You deserve the gift of time to spend and give with your loved ones and your hobbies.  Our loss is your families gain.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you,
You are a good man Mike Myatt!

Sincerely,
Bud Halpin.
