A summer of science: NII Explore engages students and adults alike

“Can I try again?” In the face of a crumbling spaghetti tower or a misfiring popsicle stick catapult, these four words were music to teacher and Director of NII Explore Phillip Craig’s ears this summer.

“Our Science in the Summer program saw incredible creativity and ingenuity from students of all ages this season,” describes Craig. “Even parents and grandparents were getting in on the competition!”

Presented by the Nuclear Innovation Institute, Science in the Summer made its way across the region, with instructors visiting locations around Bruce and Grey counties.

Sponsored by Bruce Power and Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), the program delivered hands-on STEM experiments to more than 1,000 students, on topics like flight, engineering, space, energy, and more.

“We couldn’t have done all this without our fantastic sponsors and enthusiastic partner organizations across the region,” adds Craig. “Not to mention the Science in the Summer Squad: instructors Luke McBride, Emma Swift and Sarah Spragg. Their excitement for science was contagious this summer!”

Instructors visited day camps in the Municipality of Brockton, Ripley, Lucknow, and Hanover. And the NII booth could be found at Bruce County Public Library branches up and down the peninsula, Bruce County Museum, the Port Elgin Beach Market, Teeswater Pool and area provincial parks, just to name a few.
