You may be asking yourself where did the month of August go? I know I certainly am! It was an action packed month for our U10 Girls Underwood Financial Saugeen Shores Sting team, filled with Provincial quarter finals games, tournaments, practices and fun.
When last we followed our young players, they were headed to Barrie for a tournament and their quarterfinals game versus Stratford. The weekend started out on great note Friday night with a wonderful team outing to Splash On Water Park at Centennial Beach in Barrie.

Bright and early the following morning, the girls faced off against the Stratford Flames at Tree Nursery Sports Park for their Provincial Bracket quarter finals game. Our young Sting team put up a great fight with some great defensive plays, but unfortunately weren’t able to beat the Flames and sadly, their Provincial Bracket journey came to an end. It was a great game and Elliana Cameron received a Player of the Game award. It should also be noted that the Stratford Flames went on to beat LaSalle Jr. in the semi-finals and Oakville in the finals to become the Provincial Bracket B Champions.
On a happier note, there was a lot more baseball to be had as the team continued on to play in the Barrie tournament with some exciting games against Aurora and Barrie. During these two games, Peyton Myatt picked up a Player of the Game award for her excellent pitching skills versus Aurora. Penelope Martin received a Player of the Game award for some outstanding hits while playing against Barrie and Olivia Clark received a sportsmanship award.
A few weeks later, our U10 girls were at it again in Concord at Tudor Park for another day tournament where they would be playing against Halton, Milton and Provincial Champs, Stratford. The day started with Peyton Myatt pitching and Maelle Wiles catching for their first game versus Halton. It was a great game with some wonderful defensive plays, some excellent pitching by Peyton Myatt and Brooke Lamont and some notable hits by Penelope Martin, Janey Harris and Keagan Kruse. Lane Topham’s bat was on fire for this game with some excellent hits including a beauty double hit to the outfield which granted the team their first win of the day and a Player of the Game award for Topham.
As the heat of the day kicked in, the players played their second game against Milton Sr. Olivia Clark took to the mound to start the game with Janey Harris catching. As the game progressed, there were great hits by many players including Maelle Wiles, Brooke Lamont and Lane Topham. There were some great defensive plays as well, like Olivia Clark catching the ball and throwing to first baseman Lane Topham for an easy out, Janey Harris’ excellent catching skills behind the plate or Brooke Lamont and Olivia Clark catching fly balls, but despite their best efforts, the girls lost to Milton.
Despite the scorching heat, the girls continued on to play Stratford for their last game of the day. It was a gruelling game as the sweltering heat made the easiest of plays that much more difficult. Many players had to take turns sitting with ice packs to try to cool down and even parents sat beneath branches of nearby trees, desperate to find shade. All our young players deserved a round of applause for playing on in these high temperatures, but in particular Peyton Myatt, whom despite the heat, pitched the entire game and went on to receive a Player of the Game award for her efforts. Although they once again lost to Stratford and were all exhausted from the day and the heat, the young athletes had a great day of baseball as well as a well-deserved ice cream on the way home.
The season both continues and ends for our U10 Underwood Financial Saugeen Shores Sting Team, as they host a year end tournament this coming weekend September 11th and 12th at Jubilee Park in Southampton and Biener diamond in Port Elgin. So if you’re in the area and want to take in some baseball, please join us in encouraging our young U10 team for their final tournament of the season.
