Bruce Power recognized on list of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People

For the ninth year in a row, Bruce Power is being recognized by Canada’s Top Employers for Young People as a national leader in providing high-quality workplaces and programs for young women and men just starting their careers.

(R)Cathy Sprague, Executive Vice-President, Human Resources, and Natalie Manzarpour, Trading Analyst (L), received a plaque from Mediacorp Senior Editor Kristina Leung on Friday (Jan. 17) recognizing Bruce Power as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People

The company is being honoured by the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project on its 2020 Top Employers for Young People list for its focus on young employees through the on-site North American Young Generation Nuclear (NAYGN) organization, and for developing future employees through its student development, summer student and internship programs.

Now in its 18th year, Canada’s Top Employers for Young People is an editorial competition that recognizes employers offering the country’s best workplaces and programs for young people starting their careers. Winners of the competition are chosen by the editorial team at the Canada’s Top Employers project on the basis of the programs and initiatives they offer to attract and retain younger workers. These include benefits such as tuition assistance and co-op or work-study programs. The editors also examine each employer’s mentorship and training programs, including benefits such as bonuses paid on completing trades or professional designations. The editors also review each employer’s career management program, looking for initiatives that help younger workers advance faster in the organization.

“Employers are responding to a generation that has come of age with social media,” says Kristina Leung, Senior Editor at Mediacorp. “With social media, everyone has a voice and feels empowered. There’s an expectation by young people that their workplace will be the same, that they can contribute and have an impact.”

Cathy Sprague, Executive Vice President, Human Resources for Bruce Power, said the company’s longstanding place on the list is a reflection of the company’s success in providing opportunities for young workers to enjoy long, highly satisfying careers in the nuclear industry.

“It’s an exciting time for our company with the start of our Major Component Replacement project – the next phase of our Life-Extension Program that will allow Bruce Power to provide clean and affordable power to 2064 – and our expanding role in the production of life-saving medical isotopes,” Sprague said. “We are attracting great young people seeking opportunities and we offer them the ability to move through a variety of roles.

“Today, we have many career opportunities for young people to pursue, from engineering and project management, to operations, as well as support work in our

supply chain, HR and finance departments. We thank the organizers of Canada’s Top 100 Employers project for recognizing us once again.

Regan Geertsma, President, NAYGN, congratulated Bruce Power on once again being selected to the Top Employers for Young People’s list.

“Year after year we are impressed by the support and encouragement we get from our leaders to do great things,” Geertsma said. “NAYGN has had many opportunities to work with the company to help young men and women develop and grow into future leaders.

“That high level of engagement and support benefits both Bruce Power and NAYGN.”
