Students from Bruce, Grey and Huron counties can now apply for post-secondary scholarships as part of Bruce Power’s annual Scholarship Program.
Once again this year, Bruce Power will award $500 to 100 successful applicants who are pursuing post-secondary education or a trade, for a total of $50,000 in scholarships. Forty scholarships are allocated for students enrolled in full-time studies in a program of study leading to a University degree, while 35 are for students enrolled in community or technical college. There are also 15 scholarships allocated for self-identified diverse population in any type of post-secondary studies – persons with disabilities, Aboriginal (First Nations, Inuit or Metis) or visible minorities, while 10 are allocated for special consideration students (mature students, Crown wards, first generation students, graduate students, etc.) in any type of post-secondary studies.
All applicants for the eighth annual Scholarship Program must read the eligibility requirements and then complete the online form at https://www.brucepower.com/in-the-community/scholarships/post-secondary-school. The application period runs May 15-June 15, and the scholarships will presented to the recipients at a breakfast event at the Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre on Aug. 8.
“Education is the key to our future,” says James Scongack, Bruce Power’s Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs & Operational Services. “Though not all recipients will work on the Bruce Power site, we know that a strong education and the pursuit of skilled trades will benefit the entire region and the province, so we are happy to assist these local students in any way we can.”
Bruce Power will also expand its secondary and elementary school awards program to now reach every school in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties. Every secondary school in the Bluewater, Bruce-Grey Catholic and Avon Maitland District School Boards will award two graduates each year with a Women in Trades Award and a Future Innovator Award, each worth $500.
The Women in Trades Award will be presented to the most deserving female student taking courses in design and technology, who is pursuing a career in the skilled trades. If no student is doing so, it will go to a student pursuing engineering.
The Future Innovator Award will recognize students who have achieved high academic results, demonstrate a passion for and show promise in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering or Math, and studying this area of specialty at the post-secondary level.
In addition, Bruce Power will provide $100 per school per year to Grade 8 graduates from all elementary schools in Bruce, Grey and Huron Counties. The winner will be a top student who has excelled in the subject of science, who demonstrates leadership in the classroom setting, and who is a diligent student, turning in work on time and completed to the best of his or her ability.
Through a partnership with Indspire, Bruce Power will also present thousands more in scholarships for local Indigenous communities through the Indigenous Post-Secondary Award, which provides $4,000 to students from Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation, Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, the Historic Saugeen Métis or the Métis Nation of Ontario Region 7, who have completed at least one year of post-secondary education or apprenticeship programs.
