Bruce Power wins third prestigious award



Bruce Power’s leadership role in helping Ontario during the fight against the COVID-19 health crisis is being recognized by Canadian Manufacturing magazine as the Services award winner of the Responding to COVID-19: Industry Leadership Honours.

Mike Rencheck, President and CEO of Bruce Power, accepted the award during Canadian Manufacturing’s virtual awards gala today. Canadian Manufacturing created the awards to recognize Canadian industry for joining the fight against COVID-19 when the pandemic struck in early March, offering support through the manufacturing and procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitizers, ventilators and other innovative devices.

“Our core business is supplying safe, reliable electricity to the people and businesses of Ontario, and medical isotopes globally. When it became clear that the pandemic was imminent, we knew there was a key role for us to play in helping others,” said Rencheck. “I’m grateful to Canadian Manufacturing for recognizing our contributions, and I accept this award on behalf of our employees, contractors and supply chain partners.

“I am particularly proud of our employees, who volunteered, organized and distributed more than 3,000 urgent care packages, 50,000 litres of hand sanitizer and tens of thousands face masks to our surrounding communities, and with our retirees raised $120,000 for a Go Fund Me campaign to support 38 food banks in our region.”

Since the beginning of April, Bruce Power has secured 1.7-million piece of PPE to more than 100 organizations, including health-care and front-line organizations in Grey, Bruce and Huron counties and throughout Ontario. The company’s PPE distribution represents the largest private-sector donation of PPE in Canada.

Bruce Power has built upon its efforts to provide PPE to those in need by also launching an online portal called Strength in Numbers (, which provides local municipalities, businesses and community organizations with access to affordable PPE. The initiative aims to support the safe reopening of our economy while also supporting the health and safety of our communities.

The company was a partner of the Accelerated Ventilator Development Program with the University of Toronto and Promation. With forecasted concerns of ventilator shortages researchers saw a void that needed to be filled quickly during the COVID crisis. Bruce Power worked with Promation to provide funding and expertise and within 68 hours, the team produced a working ventilator prototype.

In addition to securing PPE and life-saving ventilators, Bruce Power has led several other initiatives, including:

• A Go Fund Me page was created to collect donations in the fight against COVID-19. All funds collected supported local food banks in our region (38 food banks in total) that will continue to see increased demands in the coming months. Collectively, Bruce Power employees, present and past, demonstrated their generosity by raising $120,000.
• Establishment of 100 isolation beds and supporting PPE for recovery centres in Grey-Bruce and a 50-bed pop-up isolation centre in support of the outbreak affecting agricultural workers in Essex County.
• Donated 50,000 litres of hand sanitizer distributed to local businesses, community organizations, food banks and Indigenous communities.
• Raised and contributed $1 million for urgent needs across Ontario, including food banks and more than 3,000 care packages within Grey-Bruce region.
• A $400,000 donation from Bruce Power and the Power Workers’ Union to University Health Network (UHN) to accelerate research in COVID-19 prevention, diagnostics, anti-viral therapies and cures.
• 190,000 community updates distributed, in partnership with local health units, to raise awareness and stop the spread of the virus.
• Strong collaboration with public health officials in Grey-Bruce and Huron-Perth counties to co-host virtual town halls with the local Medical Officer of Health.

The Canadian Manufacturing award comes almost a week after Rencheck and James Scongack, Executive Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Operational Services, were named Gold winners of the CEO World Awards, and Bruce Power’s creative strategy team learned it was being honoured with two Stevie Awards from this year’s International Business Awards.
