Building numbers remain strong in Saugeen Shores

After 2019’s record-setting year for building activity in Saugeen Shores, building activity continued to hold strong in 2020.

Despite the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Saugeen Shores saw construction values in the first half of the year (to June 30/20) of $32 million. This figure was well above the five-year January-to-June average of $27 million.

Although the pandemic created restrictions on new building permits for several weeks earlier in the year, Town building department staff processed plans and issued permits at an accelerated rate.

By the end of November, 350 building permits were issued with 120 residential units created at a value of more than $70 million.

It would appear, too, that with more than $5 million in permits for renovations and additions, people were spending more to improve their homes.

“It would be an understatement to say that 2020 was a challenging year for construction projects,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “But these building numbers demonstrate Saugeen Shores’ continued growth, which is creating new opportunities to improve our residents’ quality of life throughout our community.”

The construction value total of almost $77 million included residential, commercial, institutional, agricultural, and other new builds, renovations, additions and demolitions. For more in-depth construction reporting, visit the Building Reports page.
