On reflecting back on the 14th Chantry Island Cham-bettes Christmas Home Tour and for those who may not have had the opportunity to view the homes, we are taking a reflective look at another – the Mulholland home.
When it comes to differences, such as chalk and cheese, the Mulholland home is very unique and different from the more traditional styled home that we took another look at recently (the Hart-Seiler home).

The Mulholland home is set in the quiet Miramichi Shores subdivision steps from Lake Huron and is an example of minimalist modernism but that still retains a family ambience. The design of their custom modern home took a year for Melissa Carr and Matt Mulholland to complete as they wanted an ultra-modern home ideal for entertaining but also for quality family time.
Melissa took the reins on the design and decorating, while Matt made their visions come to life. With over 7,600 sq. ft. of finished living space on three levels, the house was built around its heart and grand showpiece – a three story custom-fabricated modern steel staircase in black, made by Jim and (his late father) Charlie Feddema.
The modern open-concept design with 21 foot ceilings in the great room has windows around the top perimeter allowing light to filter through from two directions along with a wall of sliding glass doors to the backyard.
Separating the open kitchen and dining area from the living room is a two-story double-sided fireplace with cozy in-floor radiant heat throughout.
On the one side of the fireplace is the ultra-sleek entertainment kitchen that features a 17 ft. long ‘party’ island with bright yellow stools adding a splash of colour to the black and white decor and with an adjacent dining area that seats an additional ten people and with quartz throughout.

The contrasting living room, on the other side of the fireplace, with its black shelving unit and giant brilliant white sectional sofa grounded with a black area rug, overlooks the private fenced yard with, hot tub and fully equipped guest house. The only colour other than black and white is the tropical greenery that thrives in the bright room.
The staircase, divides the living room from the entrance foyer and leads to a first landing with a breathtaking interwoven global chandelier, before continuing up to the upper bedroom level. The railings are clear looking-glass panels that give an unobstructed view throughout the home.
To the left at the top of the stairs is the master bedroom with a deck overlooking the pool. Decorated in bright colours with a vibrant yellow rug the bedroom leads into the sumptuous ensuite with double vanities and a stand-alone bath in the spa-like 8 x 12 ft. shower room encased in glass.
To the right are the couple’s children’s bedrooms. Their son’s room features a computer area and a full-size bed with tufted headboard and sitting area with splashes of vibrant orange and green accents.
Down the hall, is their daughter’s room in luscious varying tones of pink and which also includes a sitting area and mirrored night-table perfect ‘glam’ for a girl as well as double closets.
Downstairs on the very lower level, is an 1,100 sq. ft. gym complete with commercial grade training equipment, a home theatre entertainment area, shuffle board, pool table and bar, all perfect for entertaining or for the entire family to enjoy.
Of the six homes on the Tour, this home’s design and ultra-modern decor also makes this home truly unique.
The Cham-bettes 15th annual Christmas Tour of Homes is already in the planning for November, 2023.
