It may be an oxymoron but ‘Christmas in July’ is all about giving when the ladies hold their annual tournament for the local Food Bank.  Each year, they hold their Christmas in July with the criteria that each golfer or participant bring a grocery bag filled with food and/or hygiene items.

Of course, it’s also always a time for getting out those holiday outfits.

“The summer months are difficult for the Food Bank as most ‘foodraisers’ to stock the shelves are held on special occasions during the year such as Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, “said organizer Cheryl Smethurst, “and by organizations such as local Police and Rotary with their ‘Shop with a Cop‘ and the First Responders, EMS food and toy drive.”

As the year winds down however, food donations become more scarce and, with the numbers using the Food Bank ever increasing, it can be a dire time of year for both the Food Bank volunteers and those needing the items on the shelves.

As the bags kept piling up, the Food Bank’s Karin Friis exclaimed, “This is amazing!  It’s my first time experiencing this event and the generosity of the women is incredible.”

According to Friis, at the end of the day more than 630 lbs. of items were recorded. “We received not only food but much-needed items such as diapers, toothbrushes and various other hygiene items.

“This will definitely make a difference.”
