Thanks to the generosity of sponsors from the annual Gran Fondo Lake Huron, presented by Bruce Power & Suppliers fundraising cycling event, some local children and families will be hitting the streets and trails this summer with brand-new bikes and helmets.
This year’s donation was made possible with support from several committed sponsors, including Shawflex, RBC, Aecon, the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW), and Westinghouse. Their continued investment in the community fundraising event and in the well-being of local youth reflects the power of community and corporate giving.

For the past few years, the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) has partnered with the Port Elgin Salvation Army Food Bank and the Aaron Roote Memorial Youth Centre at Saugeen First Nation to distribute bikes and helmets to children and families who need them most. What began as a small initiative has grown into an annual tradition, providing new bikes, joy, freedom, and a sense of belonging.

“We are thrilled to participate again in this year’s Gran Fondo Lake Huron Ride! It’s an incredible opportunity to support the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation and make a positive impact in our community. We can’t wait to hit the road and ride for a great cause!” Carly O’Shea HR Manager, Aecon Construction Group Inc.
Matt Letvenuk of Shawflex also said that they will again have a team participating. Last year, 2024, the company not only had a riding team but also sponsored the Thede rest-stop – a popular rest stop where butter tarts play a big part!
Registration is now open for this year’s fundraising ride which includes an event t-shirt, medal and after ride BBQ as well as a complimentary beer courtesy of Three Sheets Brewing.
