Hazardous Waste collection days over for another year

Saturday, September 27th was the second and last day for Saugeen Shores residents to get rid of their hazardous waste at the Town’s yard on Peel Street in Southampton.

Each year, Bruce County holds ‘hazardous waste’ days at municipalities throughout the region to collect waste that cannot, or should not, go into landfills.

According to supervisor, Andrew Yule, Saugeen Shores and Kincardine have the largest turn-outs when it comes to eliminating hazardous waste.  “Here, in Saugeen Shores, we generally have 500 vehicles come through.”

Yule said that there are 15 hazardous waste days each year in Bruce County, with paint and used oil being the most prominent waste.  “The company Phototech Environmental Solutions takes all the paint,” he explained. They also specialize in aerosols, batteries, computer/electronic components, gas cylinders, light bulbs, mercury, oil & oil filters and solvents.”

“Bruce County tries to make it as easy as possible for residents,” he added.  “They simply drive in and open their trunks and we removed everything and they drive away.  Our staff come from across Bruce County, including Chesley, Paisley, Lucknow and Saugeen Shores on hazardous waste days.”

Commercial, industrial, or agricultural waste, as well as PCBs, ammunition, and flares, are prohibited and only containers 30 litres or smaller are accepted.

The list of acceptable items is extensive.
