Letter to the Editor: Swim teams angry over ill-advised decision to cancel competitive season

To the Editor:

Here’s something you (Saugeen Shores residents) might make a community cause.

A couple of days ago, the SDSS Swim Team was advised that the school competitive season was cancelled for this school year, “ Due to the ongoing construction and delayed opening of the new pool” and because “we were unable to secure enough practice time before our first meet and the district finals.”

As I understand it, the team needs eight practice sessions before their first meet and an additional eight practice sessions before February 11th to qualify for the big meets .”

Apparently, this cancellation was a joint decision by the town and the school and I would like to know exactly who made this decision and the justification for it and what efforts were made to retain this team season.

It seems to me that if the new pool opening is delayed the logical decision would be to keep the High School pool available to the High School swim team, plus The Breakers plus leisure use until the new pool opens.

This decision is penalizing students who have represented and won at CWOSSA and OFSAA and done the school and the town proud over many years. These kids have every right to be angry because something that they have planned and practiced hard for has been terminated by an ill-advised decision, especially when there is a logical solution.
