To the Editor:
I recently offered feedback to the Town of Saugeen Shores through its ‘Engage Saugeen Shores’ portal regarding the Hwy. 21 and Turner Street (Foodland) proposed roundabout.
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the recent Public Information Session at Town Hall, but I’ve now had the opportunity to review the online presentation and draft design drawings.
Coming from the UK and being a regular driver in Europe, I’ve experienced firsthand how well-designed roundabouts enhance both road safety and traffic flow. I’m therefore fully supportive of the proposal for a roundabout at Highway 21 and Turner Street.
I do, however, have one suggestion for consideration.
In many parts of the world, roundabouts also serve as an opportunity to showcase public art or community pride through sculpture, monuments, or attractive garden displays.
Closer to home, the City of St. Thomas has an excellent example — a roundabout featuring a laser-cut steel railway engine celebrating the town’s railroad heritage.
Given the Town’s target of completing this project by Summer 2026, I understand that incorporating such a feature immediately may not be feasible. However, I would encourage the final design to include provisions that would allow a public art installation or landscaped feature to be added later.
This particular location, at the northern gateway to Southampton and near our neighbours at Saugeen First Nation, offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Southampton’s rich history, connection to the Saugeen First Nation and its vibrant, growing future.
To move forward, it may be helpful to establish an ad-hoc committee of community members and stakeholders to develop a concept for a fitting feature that reflects our shared heritage and aspirations.
I also understand that a second roundabout may be planned for the south end of Town at McNabb Street and Highway 21. It would be great to see a complementary art or landscape feature there as well to create welcoming gateways at both entrances to the Town.
I’d be very happy to discuss these thoughts further or participate in any community discussions on the topic.
Best regards,
