To the Editor:
We the residents of Southampton have been waiting for many years to have our High/wide main Street project completed. The issue is to have the project entail what 90% of the resident taxpayers want. This involves replacing infrastructure paving.
It was anticipated that our ‘elected’ governing officials in their wisdom would not change the configuration of our High/wide main street. The question that the taxpayers would like to know is – did the Mayor and Council abdicate their responsibility and leave it up to a few members of the BIA and Consultants who only comply with objectives of Council.
Council must be aware that 90% of residents do not want bumpouts/curb extensions.
Our forefathers saw the beauty of Southampton’s High/wide main street, which leads to the waterfront, Chantry Island view, beach boardwalk, water, etc. The access to water via the wide main street made our town the envy of all municipalities in our area and set Southampton above the rest. This is why so many, made or are making Southampton their chosen home.
We ask that Mr. Mayor and Council members “give your head a shake”, take a deep breath and listen to the residents of Southampton who help pay your salary. Also, it is we who will be paying for this monstrosity and the six new bumpouts/curb extensions that 90% DO NOT WANT.
Sincerely,
On behalf of 90% of concerned residents,
Hal Burke, Sandy Burke, Peter Sanagan, Bob Pantlin, Pete McGuire, Anne Farrell, Kathryn Forsyth, Barry Ruhl, Doug Mahon, Art Knechtel
