Nuclear power site expansion will impact planning going forward says Mayor Charbonneau

“Planning to expand nuclear at the Bruce Power site is the largest economic development since the mid-1970s for the region … and it’s an exciting time,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau at Council’s Monday night meeting on July 10th.

The Minister of Energy Todd Smith made the announcement on Wednesday, July 5th at the Bruce Power site, that the long-term vision is for 4800 watts in new generation over the next decade or more.

Bruce Power is the largest nuclear site in the world with Bruce A and B housing eight CANDU reactors.  It is anticipated that the new expansion to a Bruce C will include another five reactors, “… which I hope will be CANDU” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau at the announcement on July 5th.

“This will be a huge infusion of dollars in tens of billions of dollars and will be a significant Provincial capital project,” added the Mayor.

“It’s important to for us as a municipality to reconsider as we go forward with all those things that go into the planning of the municipality, the population projections, all of the servicing that will be required and to begin to talk about how we talk to the province about the impact on our community and how we can receive appropriate compensation to make sure that we can service that provincial significant project appropriately,” added Mayor Charbonneau.

He went on to say that it will also be a subject of conversation between the municipalities and First Nation who are already talking about it.

“It’s great news for our future and guarantees that site well into the 22nd century,” he said but also pointed out, “it is a matter for us to consider carefully as we go forward in planning the community.”
