Editor’s Note:

Betty was the best friend of my mother, June for 40 years.  They lived next door to each other where their husbands would chat over their fence.  When they lost their husbands within the same year, they became best fast friends.  Together, they enjoyed travelling to Florida for many years.

She was a kind, funny and gentle person who was a true friend and often referred to me as her ‘niece’.  She never had children of her own and, when my own grandchildren, June’s great-grandchildren were young, Betty would visit and play with them and often told stories of how she “… loved to create a farm with grandson James that he would hide under his bed”.

Betty eventually sold her home in Port Elgin and moved into the retirement home Elgin Lodge.  Each month, the residents celebrated monthly birthdays and she and June would attend the celebrations.

A devoted member of Tolmie Presbyterian Church in Port Elgin, Betty devoted her time and tithes to the church where it is planned that a ‘Betty Watt Tribute day’ will be held in the Spring (2022).

Betty adored her two younger brothers, Jack and Ken, and I can only imagine how she was devastated with their sudden loss within months of each other, but she will now join them and her husband David in her hometown of Pembroke.

You will be missed Betty.
