As usual, summer in Saugeen Shores has begun and, with it, the many activities.
Recently two young women in downtown Southampton were overheard saying, “What a cute little town, I wonder what there is to do here”.
While local beaches attract visitors, there is also a variety of events for visitors to take in.
The following is only a smattering of activities that have occurred over only three days since the Canada Day celebrations, and that are just an example of what will continue throughout the summer.
Adjacent to the Coliseum (arena), behind the Town Hall in Southampton, the Marine Heritage Society hosts the ‘Artisans and Tastes Market‘ with vendors and artisans from across Grey, Bruce and Huron counties. From artwork to fresh produce, jewelry to jams, there is something for everyone.

Then, in Port Elgin, there is the weekly Wednesday Farmers’ Market with some 60 vendors, food and entertainment.
Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre has also kicked off its summer activities with the beginning of its Wednesday Summer Shows. The first show featured reptiles especially for children … and their parents. In addition to Summer Shows, the Centre holds Cultural Demonstrations, Monday Movies … and more.
The annual antique show, always a popular activity and fundraiser was held at Southampton’s Coliseum (arena) where vendors came from across the province for the one-day event.
Given Southampton’s focus on the arts, upcoming is the Southport Horticultural Society – Tour of Gardens, the Festival of Arts, Art on the Fence, Bruce County Playhouse professional theatre productions, the two-day free family-fun Marine Heritage Festival … and much more.
The Southampton Arts Centre in downtown Southampton has become a cultural hub for the area with Art Gallery exhibits and Art School summer programming for all ages.
Chantry Island, offshore from Southampton, is also one of the key destinations for visitors with its restored original lighthouse and keeper’s quarters. The Marine Heritage Society, a volunteer organization, maintains the island and conducts daily boat tours for visitors.
The downtown cores of Southampton and Port Elgin are abuzz with summer activities and that doesn’t begin to tap into the calendar of events.
So, what is there to do in this “cute little town”? There is something for everyone.
