Port Elgin Legion holds D-day commemorative ceremony

Although it was a small crowd, it was again a moving ceremony as Port Elgin Legion Branch 340 held a D-Day commemoration ceremony on June 6th (2026) at Port Elgin Cenotaph.

Veteran, Matt Patterson, laid a wreath in memory of those service men who died in the invasion of the allied troops at Normandy, France in World War II.

Those who fought grow fewer and fewer as time marches on .. the young men who went to war believing that they were fighting an enemy who could destroy freedom as we know it today.

Branch Secretary, Norma Dudgeon, organized her last D-day ceremony and read from the always touching, ‘For the Fallen’ as she heads into retirement from the Legion executive …

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
