Sharecrow time is winding down – become a Hunger Hero

Fall can be a difficult time for food banks when usage is increasing and community Christmas food drives have yet to begin.

According to local food banks, the numbers using their services are going up every day.

Thanks to the Chantry Island Cham-bettes however, the ‘Sharecrow Hunger Heroes’ food drive is there to fill the gap, but only three days remain to take in some of the more than 100 scarecrows, limited only by imagination, throughout Southampton and Port Elgin.

At each ‘sharecrow’ stop, visitors are encouraged to ‘treat the scarecrows’ by dropping off non-perishable items that will be donated to local food banks.

The 11 day Food Drive & Fundraiser ‘Get Stuffed’ in 2024 proved so successful that the Cham-bettes decided to hold it again this year.  The event allows service clubs and charities to create a family-oriented event in their community that results in “… TONS of food donations for the local food bank and THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS for the charity and/or food bank”.

Among the items that are encouraged include canned goods, babyfood/formula, juice boxes and hygiene items such as toothpase, laundry soap, toilet paper, diapers and can openers.

As one of the displays says … “Hunger isn’t always visible”

Tour maps are available at several retail outlets or visit on-line at https://sharecrows.org/

For those who can’t take in the tour, you can still be a ‘Hunger Hero’.  There will be a major Donation drop-off day on November 1st at the Boathouse (beside the Coliseum arena) in Southampton from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
