Sister City project initiated by reader is approved by Council

To the Editor:

I’m excited to share that Saugeen Shores Council has approved the staff report. Another letter from the Mayor and the draft Memorandum of Understanding will now be forwarded to Zonnebeke. An important next step for our Sister City initiative.

I thank everyone for their time, energy, and support. It simply would not be happening without everyone’s support.

This partnership carries real international significance. A formal link between Saugeen Shores, Canada and Zonnebeke, Belgium, home to Passchendaele and the world-renowned Tyne Cot Cemetery. It reaffirms the historic ties forged during the First World War and honours the sacrifices made on both sides. That alone is powerful.

The opportunities ahead extend far beyond remembrance. We look forward to cross-promotion, tourism growth, museum collaboration, school partnerships, language exchange, and broader cultural sharing. It is also an opportunity to proudly share our Indigenous heritage and foster deeper understanding between communities.

At a time when Canada is strengthening its international relationships and deepening ties with trusted partners abroad, this initiative reflects those same values at the community level.

In a world that can feel divided, it shows how local communities, united by shared history, can build lasting friendships and contribute to broader global cooperation.

I am deeply grateful for everyone’s continued support.

Kindest regards,
John Willetts
