Southampton Cenotaph Committee: Thanks Southampton 150th Legacy Fund for Cenotaph Rejuvenation project contribution

The Southampton Cenotaph Committee wishes to sincerely thank the Southampton 150th Anniversary Legacy Fund committee for their generous contribution of $91,300 toward the rejuvenation of the Southampton Cenotaph.

This meaningful donation represents a lasting investment in remembrance, community heritage, and respect for those who served and sacrificed in defence of our freedoms.

“The Legacy Fund has demonstrated exactly what it was created to do — support permanent projects that honour Southampton’s history and strengthen our community for generations to come,” said John Willetts, speaking on behalf of the Southampton Cenotaph Committee. “We are deeply grateful for their leadership and commitment to this important cause.”

More than six years ago, the Southampton Cenotaph Committee initiated discussions with the Town regarding the need to restore and thoughtfully enhance the aging cenotaph, establishing a project framework and a long-term funding target of approximately $250,000. The Committee also approached the Southampton 150th Legacy Fund early in this process, recognizing that the project aligned strongly with the Fund’s mandate of lasting community benefit.

As the project progressed, it has evolved through public input, technical review, and subsequent municipal planning processes. While specific design approaches have changed over time, the Committee’s focus has consistently remained on the core principles of dignity, historical integrity, inclusiveness, and ensuring that all who served are honoured in a respectful and permanent manner.

Through sustained collaboration with Town staff and Council, the Southampton Cenotaph Committee worked to have the project formally included in the Town’s capital planning and aligned with the Phase Two High Street reconstruction schedule, advancing the project from concept into an approved municipal initiative with defined funding and delivery timelines.

“The generosity of the Legacy Fund strengthens the community’s ability to invest in remembrance in a meaningful way,” Willetts added. “Their support helps ensure that the cenotaph remains a place of reflection, respect, and civic pride for generations to come.”

The Committee also acknowledges the dedicated committee members and professional contributors whose time, skill, and commitment helped advance the project from concept into a viable community initiative. The Committee further thanks Royal Canadian Legion Branch 155 for their ongoing support of remembrance initiatives in Southampton.

The Southampton Cenotaph Committee extends its sincere thanks to the Southampton 150th Anniversary Legacy Fund committee and to all community members who continue to support remembrance initiatives in Southampton.
