Southampton Concert Band performs Songs of Scotland

In a county with the name Bruce County and the rich heritage of the name after Robert the Bruce, a Scottish hero who achieved independence from England for Scotland in the 14th century AD, it seemed only fitting that the Southampton Concert Band choose Songs of Scotland for its annual Spring Concert 2023.

Conductor John Wills explained each selection to the audience

Held on May 27th at Port Elgin United Church, the Concert Band performed a wide variety of Sottish tunes from different eras under the direction of John Wills in Scottish regalia.

No Scottish music is ever complete however without the sound of bagpipes.

Pipe Major Andy Mackenzie and Piper Steve Wolf had toes tapping as they accompanied the Concert Band and added to the richness of the sound during a medley of Scottish tunes.

Among the many selections was a medley from the musical Brigadoon, the Regimental March, Highland Cathedral, used by the Hong Kong police, the unofficial anthem Flower of Scotland and Four Scottish Dances of the 1st Movement written by Malcom Arnold in 1957.

There was no doubt from the audience reactions that there was Scottish heritage in the room.
