Southampton Foodland held its annual summer tastings on Saturday (Aug. 12) where customers could sample some of the local products that Foodland carries.
“We are adamant about supporting local whenever possible,” says Foodland owner, Martino Catalano. “We invited only some of our many local producers today to give customers a wide sampling of the local products that we carry. People are becoming more concerned about where their food comes from and how it’s produced and are buying local now more than ever.”
Mark Snowdon of Feige’s offered perfectly prepared slices of duck, chicken and beef for dipping in the gourmet sauces.
Feige’s mission is … “We believe in farming as naturally as possible, all our animals have access to outdoors, fresh air and sunshine.”
A perfect complement were the fresh cheeses from Pine River Cheese. “One of our most popular,” said Akhil Sharma, “is our carmelized onion and, of course, our fresh curds.”
Miller’s Dairy harkens back to a by-gone era when milk was sold in glass ‘returnable’ bottles. “People can’t believe the difference in taste when milk is in a glass bottle,” says Michelle Firth.
“What’s more, being able to return the bottle for recycling is a win-win for everyone – the customer and the environment.”
Most people in the region are also familiar with The European Bakery out of Owen Sound with its homemade dishes and delectable desserts. “We also make things such as cakes and other dishes to order,” says Danielle Bennett.
