SouthPort summer camp a winner for kids in the community

SouthPort Church summer camp is again underway with 236 kids registered and more than 80 volunteers.

The day camp is free to families of Saugeen Shores and, although it’s a rain or shine event, it gives young people the chance to be out-of-doors (weather permitting) and active with soccer, basketball and games.

“We couldn’t do this without the generous support of our community,” says Pastor David Baker.  “For instance, Tim Hortons Southampton is providing muffins each morning and lemonade, Canadian Tire has donated basketballs and new nets, Independent is providing all the water, Boston Pizza provided pizzas for all the volunteers on set-up day, Chapman’s donated 1700 ice-cream treats and Southampton Foodland is storing them for us in their freezers, and WOK is providing lunch on Tuesday.  It’s just amazing.”

In addition, this year, St. John’s Ambulance Community Services support is on-hand … just in case.

While the camp is free, each child has been asked to bring a can of food each day for the local food bank.  “We want the camp to be accessible to all,” adds Pastor Baker, “but there are those out there who need our help, particularly in the summer when food bank donations are somewhat depleted.”
