More than 100 small businesses, municipalities, and community organizations across Ontario gained access to affordable personal protective equipment (PPE) through the Strength in Numbers program. As the province works to restart the economy safely, PPE continues to play an important role in reducing the spread of COVID-19.
The Retooling and Economic Recovery Council (RERC), a Bruce Power initiative, launched the Strength in Numbers portal to give small- and mid-sized organizations access to PPE at competitive prices. During two order windows – July 27 to August 14, and September 21 to Oct. 3 – organizations ordered PPE from Bruce Power suppliers Levitt-Safety and Canadian Bearings Ltd. Both order windows provided access to products such as hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, face masks and shields, thermometers, respirators, coveralls, cleaners, and special order items such as fit testers and hand-washing stations.
“As businesses began to open their doors to the public this summer, access to affordable PPE was critical to a safe reopening,” said John Peevers, Bruce Power’s Director of Community, Media Relations and Economic Development. “Strength in Numbers provided small organizations in Ontario an opportunity to leverage collective buying power to secure bulk quantities of PPE items.”
“This is a great example of corporate leadership in our community,” said Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson. “I applaud Bruce Power for taking this initiative and illustrating that we are all in this together.”
The RERC is a collaboration between Bruce Power’s Ontario-based suppliers, which is intended to operate for the duration of the global pandemic, and will focus on the continued retooling of the supply chain to meet front-line needs to fight COVID-19, as well as lay out a plan to contribute to Ontario’s economic recovery in the short-, medium- and long-term.

The RERC is presented by Bruce Power as a temporary council created to ensure the stability, reliability and economic viability of the nuclear supply chain during the COVID-19 global pandemic. It will remain in place until the pandemic has ended and full economic recovery of the Province of Ontario is well underway.
