Summer Music Camp 2020 joins the long list of cancellations

Summer Music Camp has been a fixture of summer in Saugeen Shores since 1987. Each summer 150-200 campers learn and play together for a week in July that brings wonderful musical learning and performing to our community. This summer will be different.

“Like many festivals, charities and community organizations we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel Summer Music 2020,” says Don Burns, Society President.  “We do not take this decision lightly, but we feel it is safest and most responsible for us to do. While camp this summer is cancelled, the Summer Music Society is already looking forward to Summer Music 2021 being held from July 18th – 23rd , 2021. We believe that 2021 will be our best year ever with our new Adult Contemporary Choral, Instrumental, Jazz, Vocal and Children’s programs returning to Saugeen Shores along with fabulous Festival Winds performances and our Gala student concerts.”

As a charitable organization, the Society relies on donations and funding from local businesses and community members.

Burns adds that, “As our major expenses will not occur during 2020, we are proud to be able to return our 2020 funding from Bruce Power to assist in their leadership in supporting our community through the current COVID-19 crisis. The funds we have donated back will be used by Bruce Power to boost their community hand sanitizer project.”

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you to our major sponsors Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation and all of our supporters over the years for making it possible for us to ensure that music thrives in our community.

Music is one of humanity’s best connectors. It is the universal language. If you are looking for a musical outlet or a way to connect right now, take some time to pick up that dusty instrument in the corner and honk out a few notes for your neighbours or your family. Who knows, you may reinvigorate your love for playing and come join us for Summer Music 2021!  Again, on behalf of the Board, we hope everyone stays safe while spinning a few tunes with family and friends. See you in 2021!” says Burns.
