The big Gran Fondo is almost here – come out and cheer on the cyclists for your hospital

The Gran Fondo Lake Huron, presented by Bruce Power and Suppliers is taking place Sunday August 21st and will see over 600 cyclists taking to the roads in support of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation. Cyclists will be riding in 3 different route distances (30km, 70km and 110km) covering distances from Southampton, Tiverton, Paisley and Port Elgin.

We strongly encourage residents to come out and cheer on the riders along the routes on Sunday. Come and watch or make it fun – bring signs, make noise and give all the riders a big Bruce County welcome.

We also encourage any local photography enthusiasts to take pictures, we would love to see your shots and with your permission we may want to use them in our promotional materials next year (giving you photo credit if we do).

A route map is attached, showing the three distances and the rest stops. All riders begin by the flagpole in Southampton and finish just down the street from the Hospital at the Coliseum.

Some key locations and timings where you could set up and cheer are listed below. Please be mindful of cyclists and park as far off of any roadways as you can. In most areas cyclists will be sharing the road with vehicular traffic so we would like to keep roadways and shoulders as clear as we can.

Start area and Routes110km depart at 7am, 70km at 730am and 30km at 8am

  • Cyclists turn onto Huron Shore Rd after departing Southampton FLAG so large groups of riders can be seen here in the morning
  • Hwy 21 & Conc 6 the 30km riders take this strip, best viewing time is 8:15 – 8:45
  • **The END OF THE WORLD HILL – This is THE best place to come cheer on riders as they tackle the biggest physical challenge on all the routes 8:15-9:45
  • Wellington St, Port Elgin – 8:45-12:00
  • Doll Sideroad/Conc 14 9:20- 12:00
  • If you are out in Tiverton our 110km riders have a long lonely stretch out this way and would appreciate some cheering fans. Most riders hit the rest stop at the arena between 8:20 and 9:10
  • The Hospital (park in the empty lot on the corner) 9:30- 12:30
  • Finish Line, High St by Martin’s Bike Shop (or anywhere between here and the hospital, all riders pass through here) 9:30-12:30

Come out, have some fun and cheer on the cyclists in this fundraising ride. Fun fact, about 60% of our riders are from out of town and come from areas like Toronto, Ottawa, Guelph, Burlington, London, British Columbia, Minnesota, New York, Ohio and England. Be sure to join us and give them a big Bruce County welcome.

Following the cycling, everyone will meet in the Coliseum for presentations.
